Call for Music Residency Partnerships

22 July 2010

MAKAKATA MUSIC RESIDENCY
(Makakata is the shona word for divination instruments, patterns in space & the sound of the universe)

Project Description
Makakata is a Cape Town based residency program being developed for musicians and composers, working across all musical genres (jazz, classical, indigenous, popular, electro-acoustic, soundtrack), sound art, & contemporary audio cultures.

This music residency program will have studio & project room space for visiting musicians, located in the Cape Town City Hall, a dedicated multi-disciplinary cultural venue in the central city.

RESONANCE BAZAR is keen to form networks and partnerships with existing music residency programs, music education institutions and other cultural and artistic facilities, on the African Continent, within the Middle East and in South Asia:

We will make this program available to musicians coming initially from these regions:
- Sub-Saharan Africa: South African Developing Community Countries
- West Africa
- East Africa
- MENASA (Middle East, North Africa, South Asia (Middle East: Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Turkey, the Levant (Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey), North Africa (Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia) and South Asia (India and Pakistan)

Makakata Music Residency maintains an exploratory and innovative musical, artistic and educational agenda, and is directed by a project team consisting of Julia Raynham, Dizu Plaatjies, Colin Miller, Ncebekazi Mnukwana and Shannon Mowday.

In the 1990s Asian, African and non-western visual arts residencies appeared, claiming the institutional remapping of the international art world. Resonance Bazar is committed to supporting the development of musicians by creating music residencies that parallel arts residencies, and support the development of musicians as artists, who boldly create music beyond entertainment & commercial constraints.

MAKAKATA offers three lengths of stay for visiting residency musicians:
- 3-month studio residencies, which gives musicians/composers/sound-artists the chance to get a broad insight into a different cultural environment. During their residency, they can find inspiration, establish networks and make their work known in a new context, without being under the pressure of production.

- 4-week research residency, enables musicians/composers/soundartists to carry out research in Cape Town. Research musicians are required to give a public workshop, enabling knowledge transfer to local learners & musicians/composers /sound-artists and practitioners working in the music culture sector.

- 10 day Critical Practice Residency, for musicians, music journalists, music educators and philosophers, to showcase writings/performances/installations of their current work, engage in critical conversations/seminars with local musicians about their work, bring to South Africa new ideas about the cultures of music existing in their country of origin.
